Consumers ~ Frogs

Consumers, in their behavioural patterns display frog-like tendencies.

Seth Godin, in ‘All Marketers are liars’ raises a very valid point. He asks “Why in spite of having a larger brain, more acute senses are we unable to swat that elusive fly which a lesser developed cold blooded mammal does so effortlessly?” It is because frogs only understand motion. So they focus on this fly which is in motion and it is only because the fly is in motion, that they are able to gauge its presence and hence able to catch and ingest it.

Similarly your consumers will buy your product only if it shows motion – read as change/differentiation. Blogger was well settled in its own comfortable collaborative web2.0 space but consumers did shift to wordpress, typepad isn’t it? Tumblr arrived with time and it provided – Collaboration again! ; There was a change though – there was progression. I’d say the same for posterous. At the core was an intention to make life simpler.

Does one feel this space is now saturated? Well if one does, I’d beg to differ. As long as one can set that fly in motion, the frogs will wait for it and consume it.
