Beijing diary : Scorpions,locusts

I was actually not going to put this up as an independent post but I am tempted to plainly because I just had a ball of a time there. Gross variety of food, extremely enthusiastic and cooperative subjects for my photos - couldn't have asked for more!

Never in my life did I imagine I would see a person eating a scorpion - yep a fried scorpion! Thomas, bow to thee!

In fact, fyi, the scorpions are alive when the shopkeeper asks you to select them. Once you select them, they are dunked into boiling oil, fried and served. Pardon me if this grosses you out. I am just stating facts as they are. The shopkeepers at this market were markedly cooperative - specially the boy with the cap on. The boy giggled away even as i clicked him. These are a set of simple people and they get overjoyed if you talk to them in mandarin. I've been doing that ever since I landed here and its paid rich dividends.

The colors were just amazing. As a clicker, I couldnt have hoped for more colorful pictures to click on. Its not without reason that I ended up with about 120 odd clicks in a space of 2 hours.

I'll leave you with a thought  - Ever pondered over what must have prompted the chinese to treat 'everything that moves' as food? These might be delicacies in their own right but given a choice, why would anyone have even tried them in the presence of more easily available substitutes? I mean - consider this - a small scoprion is of the size of a single small french fry. So, for a full meal, people must have had to garner a lot of them. Thats a lot more frustrating than just hunting one big prey isnt it? So is it the unavailability of substitutes that prompted them to take to insects? Do mail me if you have an answer.
