Beijing diary : MRT

I made my way to Tiananmen square and Wangfujing street yesterday. Thanks to Mao (a classmate), we were able to take the local MTR (railway) to Wangfujing. For a person who cannot read mandarin, travelling by the MTR can be a little challenging as there are quite a few places which do not feature English subtitles.

I got a really good pic of the train near one of the stations. With that pic, I actually got a chance to give some 'Gyaan' (unwanted info) on photography to Thomas :-)

China has a comprehensive security check in its MTR (local railway). What that probably does is it adds a bit of buffer time to your usual travel time. Its like saying "We agree that you don't have much time but consider this - these 2 minutes will increase your chances of being able to watch your kids grow up. Now, are you willing to spare 2 mins?"

So I take your leave on this one with another thought - There have been innumerable comparisons between India and China as to which country is better, more advanced, technologically more mature. China has a much larger population than does India. Still, it has managed to implement a good security mechanism for a vulnerable transportation mode. When I say this to people back home, they cynically remark "Its very difficult to implement such a thing here." I say, its less about technology and feasibility and more about willingness and sensibility in understanding the gravity of the situation. We ask you just those 2 mins everyday to keep you safe. It does not take genius to realize that it isnt a huge investment considering the invaluable returns. Next question - who is going to initiate it?
